Over the past three years since founding the Newbee Baking and Cooking International Facebook group, I’ve received numerous inquiries from aspiring home bakers and food enthusiasts eager to dive into the world of baking and start their own business. Many of them ask the same question:


“How do I start a business?”

While I may not be an expert in entrepreneurship, my extensive experience in the Food Industry, particularly the Baking World, has provided valuable insights that can guide you on your journey to becoming a successful baking entrepreneur.

Detailed Steps for Starting a Business in the Philippines and New Zealand:

In the Philippines:

  1. Register your business name with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for sole proprietorships or the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for corporations.

  2. Secure the necessary permits and licenses from the local government and Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

  3. Comply with food safety regulations and standards set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

  4. Obtain a Health Certificate and Sanitary Permit from the local health office.

  5. Invest in proper food handling and storage equipment to meet food safety requirements.


In New Zealand:

  1. Register your business with the New Zealand Companies Office.

  2. Obtain a New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) for identification and invoicing purposes.

  3. Comply with food safety regulations set by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

  4. Secure a Food Control Plan (FCP) or National Programme (NP) registration based on your business size and operations.

  5. Adhere to New Zealand’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) requirements.
